Clackamas County Adds Nature Themed Playground at Barton Park in Boring, Oregon

Written by 0dm1n | March 20, 2017

Installation is now complete on a new nature themed playground structure at Barton Park in Boring, Oregon. This playground marks the sixth project between the County and MRC & GameTime over the past few years and the third playground at Barton Park itself. This latest playground is located in the “day use” area of the park.

On this specific playground, the County was seeking a nature themed playground that also incorporated an abundance of play value for children. MRC’s playground designer in Oregon, Martha Rainey, designed a structure with tree toppers, recycled plastic timbers and a natural color scheme. The playground also consists of several slides, climbing apparatuses and musical instruments, maximizing the level of play throughout.

Reconnecting Children With Nature

“A generation ago playing outdoors in nature was usually taken for granted, but times have changed. Now, nature must be deliberately designed back into children’s lives.” – Robin Moore Diplarch, MCP, HON, ASLA

Studies reveal a strong link between children’s experiences being outdoors in nature and their psychological well-being and overall development. Research shows that when children play in environments that integrate the nature and the built environment, they reach higher levels of physical activity, engage in more social interaction, and provide increased play value within the play space.
