Custom and Themed Playgrounds: When Custom Is Worth It

Written by Liz Sankey | April 24, 2026

Most playgrounds have a similar look and feel, providing reliable and comfortable play destinations. But what if you’re looking to make something unique, like nothing you’ve seen before? Perhaps you have a dream playground design that’s been floating around in your mind, or a piece of local culture you’d like to bring to life. Whatever your creative idea may be, custom and themed playgrounds stand out and become true community destinations. They contribute to the creation of your community’s identity, evoke storytelling, and promise memorable experiences. No pressure here, though; customization isn’t always necessary, and the viability of a themed playground depends on a number of factors. In this blog, we’ll get into what defines a custom playground, when it’s worth it, and share some real-world examples. Our goal is to help you discover the capabilities of customization and determine when it makes sense for you. Let’s begin!

What Defines a Custom or Themed Playground

As we alluded to in our introduction, there is a spectrum of complexity when it comes to playground design. Here’s a visual:

On one end, you have your standard catalog playground, with set color palettes and no themed elements. In the middle of the spectrum is semi-custom, including a few specialized add-ons or themed pieces. On the furthest end, you have a fully custom and themed environment, featuring bespoke playground equipment, unique surfacing and design elements, archways and custom metal work.

Themes can be expressed through several different parts of the playground environment:

  • Structures: Unique, customized structures can be created to evoke a certain theme. Think sculptural animals climbing on equipment, huge flowers acting as shade, castle-like mossy stone towers, and so much more.
  • Play elements: Adding free-standing custom elements is a fantastic, cost-effective way to add a theme. One idea is to scatter ladybugs, butterflies, and bees around garden-themed play area, or little aliens around a space-themed park.
  • Surfacing: Amazing themes can be enhanced with custom surfacing options. Weave blue poured-in-place rubber through a green backdrop for a river, or create unique, adventurous topography that is completely inclusive.
  • Site elements: Adding finishing touches like archways, custom metal artwork, shelters, and more allows you to round out your theme and bring your custom space to life.

When Custom Is Worth the Investment

If you’re here, you might be considering if custom is right for you and if you can fit a themed project in your budget. Custom work isn’t necessarily right for every project, but there are a handful of circumstances in which we recommend it:

  • Creating a Destination Space
    • Parks meant to draw regional traffic or tourism
    • Examples: Waterfronts, downtown revitalizations, bespoke parks
  • Reflecting Community Identity
    • Parks designed to reflect local history, culture, or environment
    • Examples: School mascots, town branding, cultural symbols
  • Unique Site Constraints or Opportunities
    • For unique situations, like irregular layouts, topography, or existing features
    • Example: Integrating play into natural landscapes
  • Inclusive and Sensory-Rich Environments
    • Custom design allows for more intentional inclusive experiences
    • Examples: Sensory elements, varied engagement zones, and accessibility beyond minimum standards

Keep in mind, customization doesn’t have to mean the entire area is bespoke. Themed elements can be added discerningly across the park through different elements; some examples are listed in the previous section of this blog. There is no custom element too small to create a more enriching space.

Real-World Examples of Custom in Action

Now that we’ve broken down the what, when, and why behind custom and themed playgrounds, let’s see the who and where! Here are some custom projects we’ve completed:

1. Pepe Field Park

A great example of a semi-custom project, Pepe Field Park possesses a natural-themed, treehouse-inspired design. Featuring timbers and tree toppers, natural colors throughout, and a poured-in-place rubber river running across the surfacing.

2. McCandless Park

This park is fueled by whimsy! Being in it is like being as small as a bug; The play area features massive flower sunshades and so many freestanding play options over a sprawling space, like being in a garden.

3. Gunnell Oval Park

This bright, bold play area is themed to reflect its athletic environment, surrounded by sports fields. The playground features a custom baseball-and-bat entrance archway and is rich with custom sports elements no matter which way you look.

4. Nealon Park

This park is truly unique, boasting inclusivity, architectural appeal, and imaginative customization. The design weaves in each of the elements – earth, air, water, and fire – providing a beautiful natural-themed environment. Plus, a custom Volkswagen play bus!

5. Toms River Field of Dreams

Step onto the moonscape as you venture into Gavin’s Galaxy playground! This revolutionary inclusive complex features an outer space-themed playground populated by little aliens. At the heart of it all, people of all abilities can venture up to an inclusive mini trampoline.

6. South Mountain Recreation Complex

We might be biased, but we think this must be one of the coolest playgrounds on the East Coast: The Regatta Playground! This huge playground allows you to fulfill your pirate or Viking dreams by climbing aboard a massive custom boat structure.

How to Decide: A Simple Framework

If it all feels overwhelming, we’re here to ease your stress! Deciding whether or not a custom project is right for you really comes down to a few factors:

  • Are you looking to create a destination space?
  • Does the project need a strong identity?
  • Are there site-specific design opportunities?
  • Is there flexibility in budget and timeline?

If you answered yes to several, custom and themed is likely worth exploring!

To close, we’d like to reiterate that custom playgrounds are most valuable when they serve a clear purpose. Theming is a tool that allows the play area to not only look bold, unique, and imaginative, but to create a space that people will remember and want to return to. They can create destinations, reflect your community’s identity, and make inclusive, sensory-rich environments even more magical. If you’re here because a custom project is on your mind, we’d love to help bring your ideas to life.
