We know through extensive research that the key to effectively nurturing the potential of all people in play is dependent on inclusion. An inclusive play space is one of the best things a community can do for its people. Inclusive play simply means no one is left out, and everyone—of all ages and abilities—can play to the greatest extent possible. A great inclusive space is more than just choosing products. It is designing an environment that is conducive to connection and growth and celebrates the unique voice of the community. Inclusive designs based on validated, scholarly research, with carefully considered equipment choices, fosters lifelong social, emotional, and cognitive development. In this blog, we’ll explore how.
The social benefits of inclusive playgrounds are far-reaching. There are few other places for children of all abilities to come together and for every child to have an enriching experience, through playing cooperatively and playing parallel alongside each other. In this way, inclusive playgrounds provide a unique opportunity for peer interaction across all abilities and backgrounds. Playgrounds are cooperative environments, and children learn empathy and communication skills as they work together to share, explore, and express their creativity.
We love seeing this happen in real-time! When we installed GameTime’s GT Wave—the industry’s first inclusive climbing net—at Countryside Park in Middletown, we saw a beautiful example of parallel play. The GT Wave provides a unique experience for children using mobility devices to be at the center of a climbing net, surrounded by all their friends. “When we invited the family to take some photos a Countryside Park, we were over the moon with how much joy we all gained from the experience of watching them play,” shared Matt Miller, MRC’s Principal of Sales & Business Operation. “Their son, who uses a mobility device, was so excited to be at the center of the play environment, he kept asking to go up again and again.”
Another important aspect to inclusive play is that it is a pathway for learning. In fact, there are famous theorists who have put forth ideas about just how much children learn when they play. Jean Piaget, prominent development psychologist, viewed play as a crucial tool for children to learn new skills. His theory states that play allows children to assimilate new information and, in turn, accommodate their existing knowledge, ultimately leading to cognitive growth. Lev Vygotsky, psychiatrist, viewed play as a way for children to develop abstract thinking. Through play, children can explore complex situations and develop the skills they will use later in real-world scenarios.
There are ways to foster these learning environments through equipment choices:
At MRC Recreation, inclusion is our top priority. We’re honored to have been a part of bringing so many communities’ dreams to life! Recently, the non-profit Children and Adult Disability and Education Services (CADES) turned to our team at MRC and our partners at GameTime to create a playground where everyone could play together, regardless of ability. What came to be was so much more than just a playground – CADES playground is a National Demonstration Site for inclusion, and has become a cornerstone for community life in Swarthmore, PA. It’s a gathering place for families, friends, and neighbors of all abilities.
“It’s one thing to have [a playground] that includes kids of all types and abilities, but when you can include their brothers and sisters, their parents, that's what every one of us wants,” shared a parent of a CADES child. “When you talk to any parent who's like us, all they want is for things to be typical, for things to be similar, or to be able to do the things that other kids are doing. Now we can kind of operate on the same level and that's just phenomenal.”
Inclusive playgrounds are more than a collection of equipment—they’re thoughtfully designed spaces that nurture connection, spark imagination, and support meaningful growth. By prioritizing inclusive design, communities create environments where every child can feel seen, celebrated, and engaged. Whether you’re just beginning to dream up a new playground or looking to enhance an existing one, our team at MRC Recreation is here to help bring your vision to life.
